Willow realized something was wrong before she got out of the cot on Sunday morning. It hadn’t been a satisfying sleep, worries rattling around in her head about what might happen as they waited for Ron to contact them. Since Beckett had made a possible Klee sighting, the tension had escalated. Now as she struggled into consciousness, she felt Bee’s warm body next to hers, a little too warm. Willow flicked on her phone light to examine the child.

Bee’s cheeks were red and her forehead was hot, but the most frightening detail was that her breathing was labored and gurgly. Willow immediately threw on clothes and knocked on Tony’s door. He opened it quickly, fully dressed, but the shadow on his chin indicated he had not yet shaved. Carter was asleep on the cot.

“I think Bee’s sick,” she explained.

His face blanched. “Do you have a good doctor in town?”

“Only one, Dr. Howley. I called him when we got to town to schedule a physical, but it’s not until next week. Today is Sunday, no office hours. I’ll call his service and they can refer us.” She chewed her lip. “He’s got a partner doc who works at the clinic in Copper Ridge, but it’s twenty minutes from here. I’m sure that’s where they’ll send us.”

He looked at his watch. “It’s seven thirty. When do you think they open?”

“Eight. I had to give Laney a lift over there last week to pick up a humidifier Dr. Howley ordered from the clinic pharmacy.”

“Okay. I’ll get Carter up and we’ll take them both.”

She knew why. Because he didn’t trust Gino with Carter. Neither did she. “Let me ask my family to come stay with Carter, instead.”

He hesitated.

“It would be less risk and both my brothers know how to handle themselves.”

“I know they do. Okay. Give them a call.” He hesitated. “I’ll phone Diaz too, to be on the safe side. At least, I think that’s the smart thing to do.”

His frown said he wasn’t sure, but how could they travel without alerting law enforcement if Klee really was in the area? Again, she wished her cousin Jude would hurry back from his training.

They quickly made their phone calls. Fifteen minutes later, Willow let Austin and Pilar in.

“Levi’s on a tour, so you get the dynamic duo here.” Austin pulled Pilar into his good shoulder and kissed her temple. “She’s the best-looking wingman in the history of wingmen.”

Pilar smiled. “I’m real good at keeping a lookout and dialing 9-1-1.”

Austin lowered his voice to a whisper. “And Seth’s parked in the bushes near the airstrip entrance so he can alert us in time to get Carter into the tunnel and out of here. He was thrilled to be asked.”

Relieved, Willow thanked them again, hurried to Bee’s room and roused the sleepy girl enough to get her into a clean diaper and the clothes Mara had provided. Bee looked adorable in the pink-ruffled jumper, but she was peevish.

Tony was helping Carter into a T-shirt unaware of her presence as she hurried to find him.
